What Email Security Features Come With Hosted Exchange?

by

It should go without saying that Microsoft Exchange is the undisputed king of email and electronic communications. Nothing else comes close to offering the same power for enterprises when it comes to large-scale communication and productivity.

But what features can a Hosted Exchange solution offer when it comes to the safety and security of corporate communications?

  • Just by its sheer volume, spam can significantly slow down your email servers. And a sudden unexpected spike in spam can grind your business to a halt until new upgrades can be installed. By moving to a hosted Exchange provider, you put this burden on the shoulders of another company that has abundant resources to handle these kinds of spikes.
  • Microsoft Exchange is able integrate with third party platforms to verify the legitimacy of incoming emails using the SenderID framework.
  • Exchange, coupled with other spam filtering solutions, can apply sophisticated filters based on sender, connection, recipient, and contents of messages, using its tiered anti-spam filtering system.
  • By default, all internal emails are encrypted using TLS and SSL in order to maximize security.
  • Exchange also supports encrypted communications when connecting to external email servers.
  • Exchange has a powerful toolset at its disposal for fighting off viruses and malware, which is utilized via third party platforms like McAfee MX Logic that you can use in front of hosted Exchange.
  • Exchange enables the integration of third-party anti-virus applications, and seamlessly supports some of the top anti-virus services in the industry.
  • Once scanned, messages are stamped in order to ensure that they don’t need to be scanned again. This makes virus scanning more effective and much more efficient.

Of course, scammers, spammers and hackers are constantly increasing their effectiveness and coming up with clever new ways of hurting your business. This means that what is considered secure today won’t be secure tomorrow.

As an email administrator, you need to constantly be updating and optimizing the anti-spam, anti-intrusion and anti-virus capability of your Microsoft Exchange servers. In order to accomplish this, you need to be constantly investing resources and money to make sure that your software, hardware and skills are up-to-date.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. By outsourcing your email management to a Hosted Exchange provider, you can free up your IT budget and resources for more important strategic initiatives, and let a team of experienced dedicated experts worry about the management of your email security.

Thanks for this post as some people just aren’t as careful as they could be when it comes to email security. It is so frustrating that these spammers and hackers will always find new ways to attack your business, it is so important to keep on top of security.

Unfortunately, the issue of security is one that keeps coming up in relation to cloud computing. But this should not deter businesses from adopting Hosted Exchange – as long as you do your research and find a company that provides decent anti-spam and anti-virus technology, and (as you stated) have a team of experienced, dedicated experts managing your email security, your business will reap the benefits.
