New CoreVault Video On Data Backup Retention Settings

by

CoreVault has recently released a new Cloud Minute video, where they’ve outlined some important points that need to be taken into consideration when evaluating the cloud as a backup alternative.

In this clip, Jeff Cato joins sales engineer Edward Wallace in order to discuss the finer points of picking the right backup retention settings.

One of the first things you should consider is how you define a backup “generation” within your backup cycle. This is important, because some backup systems define a “generation” by the last time the backup was completed, while other backup services define a “generation” by the last time the file was changed.

Of the 2 approaches, the latter is better since it provides a higher level of precision when it comes to recovery and tracking of backup versions.

Another point that you’ll want to think about would be the number of backup generations which you keep on file. Many small businesses can get along just fine with no more than 5 generations since this would be enough to track a week’s worth of changes in most situations. Still, there are other businesses that require the ability to recover back to previous weeks, months, or even years.

Finally, you’ll want to take data growth and deletion into consideration. As your company grows, backups can get cluttered or overloaded with unneeded information. A proper deletion policy will help ensure that your backups remain lean and powerful.
